So I recently realised that our nation doesn't watch enough foreign films - and that some people don't even know what Cinema Paradiso is. After one of my long winded explanations on some of the greatest foreign films in the history of cinema to a few friends, I decided it's probably best to just share the love and make sure that everybody watches these gems at least once in their lives (if you haven't already, of course). So here they are, all four top French films in order; and I apologise for the prominent 1950's/60's theme in advance...
4) JULES ET JIM (1962)
Now this is what I call a classic. This is one of the weirdest, most ludicrous films you will ever watch, but it's a beauty all the same. Arguably, you could say that this is the best French film ever, but there's really not much between them.
3) MON ONCLE (1958)
Everything in Mon Oncle is just so...French. Maybe a good film to watch if you're wanting to pick up on your French speaking, but definitely a good one to watch if you're a lover of good films. The soundtrack, the costumes, everything in this is just the epitome of France in the 50's, and it's incredible quirkiness just adds to the masterpiece.
2) BREATHLESS (1960)
Before watching Breathless, I was inclined to think it would be a daft romance that would pass a little bit of time with a funny story, but it genuinely blew me away, pardon the pun. I dare you to try watching this without feeling some kind of sentiment...
1) THE 400 BLOWS (1959)
And of course, the ultimate French film. The centre of all French films. THE French film. The 400 Blows is one of my favourite movies ever, and if you complain that it's too slow or tedious then we probably won't get along. It's articulate, serene and not far from perfection.
